At the carnival I come from, Pallbearer, whenever we caught irreverent revelers with our benevolent and bare hands, we drained out every thought, bad and good, from inside their knatty heads. Then we threw the newly pure (but still decadent) devils up as fast as we could toward heaven before they could fall down again and jump up like the ass and the cock at j’ouvert. Prior to my first encounter with Itello DeMille at the Hotel La Fete, I had only read about the plight of slaves – like everyone else – in big, strapping, brown books that smelled like the dead.
