goat water -- A traditional Caribbean stew of goat meat and spices, popular on islands such as Antigua and Jamaica.

Goatwater is a series of unconventional cartoons, illustrations, poems, vignettes and stories set in a Caribbean dreamscape circa 1492. The stories chronicle the misadventures of carnival revelers and spiritual beings. Loosely inspired by Caribbean Carnival traditions Goatwater unites the sacred and the profane. In this dreamscape, reality is flexible and electric, characters are both real and ethereal. The surreal, absurd, mystifying, spiritual and darkly humorous atmosphere of carnival pervades.

The Goatwater series is also a work of protest poetry, exploring the madness of colonialism and its lingering effects: colorism, conflicted spirituality, assimilation, grief. In the spirit of carnival, however, Goatwater truly is a celebration of love, hope, sensuality and playfulness in the midst of joy and sorrow.
While the entire universe of Goatwater is interconnected, each cartoon and illustration stands on its own.

The 60 plus paintings that make up Goatwater’s (Series 1 and Series 2) illustrations were originally hand painted with acrylics and ink on approximately 8” x 12” cotton rag paper.

Goatwaterstrip
, the black and white spin-off of Goatwater is an ongoing collection of over 30 pencil and ink drawings on 9” x 12” Bristol Paper.

Goatwater
, Series 1 is available to read on this website, as are selections from Goatwaterstrip and Goatwater, Series 2, Cracked Figurines.

Shorter Goatwater projects such as We Need the Mask and the single page comic, Dream Jungle Music, were originally created with oil pastels on oil paper. Dream Jungle Music is  also available for viewing on this website.

As of, 5/6/14 We Need the Mask is available for purchase in print!
