“BASSA BASSA” is something my Mother would often say when someone asked her how she was doing. It’s a fairly common phrase in the Caribbean island of Antigua, where my Mother was born and raised. I never asked her what it meant specifically but to me it always meant, “I’m doing okay, maybe so-so, not too bad actually, and I’d like it if we could change the subject just now.…” How to describe her? She was funny, creative, elegant, private, brilliant and religious. She was my Mother. I started Bassa Bassa Arts several months after she passed away in 2008. I dedicate my art to her memory.

BASSA BASSA ARTS  is my self-contained production platform, dedicated to creating, developing and producing literary and visual art that provokes thought, ignites imaginations and celebrates and challenges traditional modes of storytelling and illustration.

Bassa Bassa Arts, in addition to being an online and offline platform for showcasing and selling my art, is a broad title, a mythic premise, a wide open canvas for the kind of work that I do, for the stories that I tell and the ways in which I tell them. Poetry obscures as much as it reveals, which is why I really appreciate the phrase “Bassa Bassa” as I’ve come to understand it. I write, paint and draw metaphysical stories loosely inspired by Caribbean carnival traditions. The characters in my stories and illustrations engage in masquerades of memory, the unconscious, and the unknown. Each work is its own carnival celebration of forgiveness, possibility, grief, and spirituality.
