Goatwater, Series 2: Transcript

CRACKED FIGURINES - PAGE 13- The Suppression Of All That Is Magic
On the way to the new world, Delilah asked Itello what he would do first when they got there. She hoped he’d say in that deep voice of his, “Baby, I want to take you to IHOP.” But he didn’t. What he said was, “Delilah, all I want to do when we get to the new world is hold your hand.” The new world, these two descendants of descendants who were the descendants of the descendants of slaves were going to, is named The Sixth World. It is a place that is twice what The Third World is. They heard that in The Sixth World it wouldn’t matter to anyone, least of all themselves, that Delilah was light-skinned and Itello dark. In the Sixth World, they would be sure that Itello loved Delilah beyond her non-threatening, somewhat socially acceptable, beauty and that Delilah had more tolerance for Itello’s darkness than she, in her troubled heart, truly did. The division between the two of them was an unfortunate legacy of the Transatlantic slave trade, stemming not solely from the mad-making effects of centuries of unpaid labor but from an equal, though often unacknowledged degradation: the practice of forcing slaves to separate love stories from their dreams and extract dreams from their love stories – in other words, the suppression of all that is magic.
