As I mentioned last week, I will from time to time post rough excerpts from a book of essays about art and creativity I am writing.  I've included one below.

                                                    Stories are Carnival

I grew up acquainted with the Caribbean carnival tradition, and more specifically that of the Antiguan Carnival tradition which, drawing inspiration from the more Lenten Carnivals celebrations was a carnival celebrating the independence of Antigua from Great Britain. In fact, I was in my Mother’s womb when I attended my first carnival and I am grateful to say that I haven’t recovered from the experience since. Nothing exemplifies the significance of survival for any oppressed group of people than the act of masking one’s self, literally or emotionally – to not only hide the truth, but to arrive, freely at greater truths.

Stories, in whatever way they come, are my way as the American-born child of Caribbean immigrants to honor that ever-powerful and wandering Carnival spirit that has helped me, with color and humor, to bear life’s tragedies and expand what forces in society have attempted for centuries to narrow.
